Nourish Your Best Friend: A Healthy, Affordable Homemade Dog Food Recipe

We starting to use this healthy food receipe when our beloved dog Joey, a Frenchie was about two years old. He had very dry skin, was scratching often, and wasn't particularily fond of any of the "premium food" we gave to him.

After about a week or so of the new food we made, his skin looked and felt so much better, he stopped scratching after about two weeks and his temperament was noticeably much better. We still fed him the best store bought food we could find now and then since this mix is soft and we feel he needed harder food occasionally for his teeth and gums.

Making your own dog food at home is a smart way to ensure your pet enjoys a nutritious meal without breaking the bank. This recipe uses everyday ingredients that pack plenty of nutrients to keep your dog active, healthy, and happy. Many pet owners report that their dogs show better temperaments, smoother skin, and improved digestion after switching to homemade meals.

Easily Found and Inexpensive Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Boil the Water: In a very large pot, boil 16 cups of water. If you are adding olive oil and/or salt, do it now.
  2. Add the Ingredients: Stir in the rice, ground meat, eggs, peas and carrots, oats, and any of the optional ingredients. It's helpful if you break up the ground meat before adding it, otherwise it tends to not break apart and even out in the mix.
  3. Simmer: Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for approximately 20 minutes. This slow cooking method softens the ingredients, making them easier to digest and ensuring that their nutrients remain intact.
  4. Cool the Mixture: Remove the pot from heat and let the food cool down completely. It will take quite a while to cool down, it stays hot for quite a while. Cooling the food is important to ensure it is safe for your dog to eat.
  5. Portion and Freeze: Once the food has cooled, use an ice cream scooper or similar sized scooper (sprayed lightly with olive oil to prevent sticking) to portion out the food. Two-three scoops per bag are a good average size (Our Frenchie Joey was good with two scoops, otherwise it started to show on his tummy!) Place each portion into Zip Loc bags and store them in the freezer.
  6. Thaw Before Serving: The day before you plan to feed your puppy dog, transfer the required number of bags from the freezer to the refrigerator to allow them to thaw gradually. We usually take out two to three days worth at a time. This method helps preserve the food’s texture and nutritional value.
